About the Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council of NSW (AH&MRC)

The Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council of NSW (AH&MRC) is the peak body for Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services across New South Wales. We work alongside our Members to strengthen Aboriginal community-controlled healthcare and improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

Our work spans advocacy, policy, workforce development, health promotion, research, training and organisational support. We bring the experience and priorities of our Members into state and national decision-making, advocate for better health systems and investment, and help build the capability and sustainability of the Aboriginal community-controlled health sector.

Join our team of dynamic and innovative people who value and proudly play a meaningful role in supporting the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people and communities across NSW.

About the Role

The LLND and Foundation Skills Educator provides specialist language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills education and learner support across AH&MRC Training. You’ll strengthen learner capability and embed foundation skills into vocational education and training, helping learners build confidence and progress towards their goals.

Responsibilities:

Learner Assessment, Planning & Support

  • Support learners from pre-training through to completion, identifying strengths, goals, learning preferences and foundation skills needs, including initial skills profiling.
  • Develop and review Individual Learning Plans and deliver targeted individual and small-group LLND, study and digital skills support.
  • Identify barriers early, coordinate follow-up and refer needs beyond the educational scope.

Foundation Skills Education

  • Collaborate with trainers and assessors to identify and embed foundation skills into vocational learning.
  • Develop contextualised vocabulary, reading, writing, numeracy, communication and digital learning supports.
  • Guide learners through assessment expectations without providing answers or producing evidence; refer assessment changes and competency decisions to authorised personnel.

Learning Resource Development

  • Develop accessible, practical and culturally respectful adult-learning resources for face-to-face, online, workplace and blended delivery.
  • Create plain-language resources covering vocabulary, numeracy, study, digital literacy, planning and step-by-step learning.
  • Follow AH&MRC approval and version-control processes for controlled resources.

 Trainer & Assessor Capability

  • Coach educators in practical LLND and digital support strategies and model inclusive teaching.
  • Contribute to professional development and clarify appropriate learner support versus inappropriate assessment assistance.
  • Identify recurring learning barriers and recommend practical improvements across training teams.

Culturally Safe, Learner-Centred Practice

  • Build respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners and communities and involve nominated supports, ACCHOs and authorised partners where appropriate.
  • Protect learner dignity, privacy and choice, and avoid deficit assumptions and seek appropriate cultural advice when required.

Foundation Skills Modules & Projects

  • Develop and improve approved non-accredited foundation skills modules, including the nine-module suite, applying relevant ACSF and Digital Literacy Skills Framework concepts and collecting feedback.
  • Maintain clear boundaries between learner support, profiling, non-accredited education, nationally recognised training and assessment.
  • Contribute to approved funded activities, monitoring records, project trackers, risk management and implementation evidence.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications & Experience

  • Demonstrated adult LLND, digital literacy or foundation skills education experience, including individual support, small-group delivery and embedding foundation skills into vocational learning.
  • Relevant qualifications in adult education, language and literacy, foundation skills, education, VET or a closely related discipline.
  • Hold or complete any credential, professional development or authorisation required for nationally recognised delivery, assessment or funded profiling before undertaking those duties.
  • Experience in an Australian RTO, Aboriginal Community Controlled organisation, health service or community education setting is desirable.
  • Familiarity with the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF), Digital Literacy Skills Framework, resource development and blended delivery is preferred.
  • Relevant VET trainer and assessor credentials where nationally recognised delivery or assessment may form part of the role is desirable.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Identify learner needs and develop practical support strategies and Individual Learning Plans.
  • Apply culturally safe, strengths-based practices and develop accessible, learner-centred resources.
  • Collaborate with trainers and assessors, support digital learning tools, and demonstrate strong communication, organisation, recordkeeping and professional judgement, including appropriate referrals and escalation.

Personal Attributes

  • Respectful, learner-centred and culturally responsive.
  • Collaborative, trustworthy and solution-focused.
  • Organised, discreet and detail-oriented, with sound independent judgement within agreed boundaries.
