About Impact Assessment

Impact Assessment is driven by a commitment to educational improvement and equity. We believe that every student deserves access to excellent teaching and the opportunity to succeed, and that high-quality assessment can play an important role in making this a reality. By giving teachers and school leaders a clearer understanding of what students know, where they are struggling and where they are ready to be extended, we aim to support better teaching decisions, improve learning outcomes and help close gaps in achievement.

We combine high-quality, curriculum-aligned assessments with a digital platform for setting, marking and analysing assessments. Together, these provide teachers and leaders with meaningful insights into student learning, progress and areas for development. Impact Assessment is part of the Impact Teaching Group, alongside Impact Curriculum (previously Ochre)  and Teach Well, united by a shared mission to improve the quality and equity of education.

Our platform leverages Smartgrade's proven technology, currently supporting more than 1,500 educational institutions and 400,000 learners across the UK, while guaranteeing local storage for all Australian data.

Impact Assessment is just over a year old and brings the energy, dynamism and opportunities of a rapidly growing organisation. We work at pace, collaborate closely and regularly tackle new challenges as we continue to develop and improve our offering for schools. It's an environment where everyone has the opportunity to shape how we work, contribute ideas and make a real impact. We're looking for people who enjoy variety, are comfortable with change, take initiative and are excited by the opportunity to help build and grow an organisation.

Context for the role

The Head of Product ensures schools can implement and use the platform confidently, while driving improvements that make it more useful, reliable and easy to use.

  • 40% product development
  • 40% school customer management and service improvement

  • Strong troubleshooting skills and confidence working with data, system configuration and integrations.
  • Ability to test functionality and reports systematically, with close attention to accuracy.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to explain technical matters in accessible language.
  • Strong organisation and judgement when balancing support requests, implementation deadlines and planned development.
  • Ability to build constructive relationships with schools and external providers.
  • Hold a valid National Police Check and appropriate state-based Working with Children Check or local equivalent.

Product & Platform Lead: Desirable experience

  • Familiarity with assessment, education data or student information systems.
  • Experience translating user needs into product requirements and coordinating improvements with a technical provider.
  • Experience delivering training and creating user guidance.
  • Understanding of privacy and security requirements when handling student data.

Key responsibilities

Technical support and implementation — 20%

  • Coordinate school onboarding, including platform configuration, student and class data, integrations and readiness for assessment.
  • Provide technical support to schools, diagnosing issues and coordinating resolution with Smartgrade where required.
  • Maintain a clear process for logging, prioritising, escalating and resolving support requests.
  • Communicate progress and solutions clearly to school staff with varying levels of technical confidence.
  • Develop guidance, support resources and repeatable processes that help schools use the platform independently.
  • Ensure school data is handled in line with agreed privacy, security and access procedures.
  • Identify recurring issues and address their underlying causes through changes to the platform, guidance or implementation process.

Product development — 40%

  • Maintain and progress the product roadmap, agreeing priorities with the CEO and curriculum and assessment team.
  • Gather evidence from school feedback, support requests and platform use to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Translate school and assessment needs into clear requirements for Smartgrade, including user journeys, report specifications and acceptance criteria.
  • Coordinate development with Smartgrade, tracking delivery, dependencies and outstanding decisions.
  • Test new features, reports and fixes before release, checking accuracy, usability and suitability for different school contexts.
  • Plan releases and communicate changes through practical guidance and demonstrations.
  • Review whether improvements deliver their intended benefits and use findings to inform further development.

School customer management and service improvement — 40%

Develop and embed a consistent approach to supporting schools from contract signature through onboarding, ongoing use and renewal.

  • Codify the school customer journey, defining key stages, responsibilities, handovers and communications.
  • Establish clear onboarding milestones and check-ins so schools understand what happens next and the team can track progress.
  • Develop practical playbooks, templates and guidance for common customer interactions, including welcome communications, training, follow-up and renewal.
  • Maintain a shared record of each school’s contacts, priorities, implementation status, engagement and outstanding actions.
  • Establish a proportionate approach to customer support, recognising the different needs of individual schools and system partnerships.
  • Introduce regular checks on school engagement and satisfaction, identifying schools that need additional support.
  • Coordinate customer activity across colleagues so schools receive timely, consistent communication and clear ownership of their queries.
  • Maintain relationships with an agreed portfolio of schools, using these interactions to test and improve the customer management approach.
  • Gather and analyse feedback to identify improvements to the platform, resources and service.
  • Ensure renewal preparation starts early, with clear ownership of follow-up and commercial conversations.
  • Impact Assessment is committed to promoting child safety and wellbeing. All staff must comply with our Child Safe Policy.

Working relationships

You will work closely with:

  • The CEO, on priorities, investment decisions and significant customer issues.
  • Smartgrade, on technical resolution, integrations and platform development.
  • The curriculum and assessment team, on assessment functionality, reporting and the accuracy of how results are presented.
  • The Marketing team, to ensure a clear handover from sales to implementation.
  • School staff, including teachers, assessment leaders, administrators and IT contacts.

What success looks like

  • Schools complete onboarding smoothly and are ready to use the platform at the agreed time.
  • Support requests are resolved promptly, with clear communication and fewer recurring problems.
  • Product improvements are delivered against agreed priorities and tested thoroughly.
  • School feedback informs development decisions, and schools can see how their input has been used.
  • Schools become increasingly confident and independent in using the platform.
  • Planned product development receives protected time alongside responsive support.

  • Be part of a social enterprise on a mission to directly support ongoing educational equity and excellence.
