About NAAFLS

The North Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Service (NAAFLS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation delivering culturally safe legal and support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing domestic, family and sexual violence across the Top End.

With offices in Darwin, Katherine and Nhulunbuy, our work is grounded in cultural respect, community collaboration and self-determination. We provide holistic, wraparound support through our legal services, child protection and family law programs, Leaving Violence Program and Miyalk Safehouse, helping create safer futures for Aboriginal families and communities.

About Miyalk Shelter

The Miyalk Domestic and Family Violence Shelter operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing culturally safe, trauma-informed crisis and short-term accommodation for women and their children experiencing, or at risk of, domestic and family violence in Nhulunbuy and surrounding communities. Our services include safe accommodation, case management, advocacy, children's and parenting support, and outreach. Through a holistic, strengths-based approach, we support victim-survivors to improve their safety, recover from violence and work towards long-term independence.

We are committed to the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people accessing our service. We support the rights of the child and will act without hesitation to ensure a child safe environment is maintained at all times.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Crisis Accommodation Team Leader to oversee the staffing and service delivery of Miyalk Shelter’s residential crisis accommodation program. Reporting to the Miyalk Shelter Coordinator, you will provide leadership, supervision and support to staff, ensuring the delivery of safe, culturally appropriate, trauma-informed and child-centred accommodation services for women, children and young people experiencing domestic and family violence.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and coordinate the daily operations of Miyalk Shelter, ensuring safe and effective service delivery across a 24/7 service.
  • Oversee intake, assessment, risk management, case management and safety planning processes.
  • Ensure services are trauma-informed, strengths-based, victim-survivor-led and child-centred.
  • Lead, supervise and support staff through mentoring, reflective practice, training and professional development.
  • Promote staff wellbeing, cultural safety and psychological safety, including strategies to manage workforce fatigue and vicarious trauma.
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with community organisations and service providers to support effective referrals and coordinated care.
  • Monitor service performance, key performance indicators, contractual obligations and funding requirements.
  • Oversee client records, data collection, reporting, allocated budgets and compliance with relevant legislation and organisational policies.
  • Support culturally informed service delivery and continuous improvement through client feedback, program evaluation and community engagement.
  • Work collaboratively with other NAAFLS programs to strengthen outreach, post-exit support, client safety and pathways towards long-term independence.

You will have a strong understanding of trauma-informed practice, the ability to guide staff in complex and demanding environments, and a genuine commitment to culturally safe, child-centred and victim-survivor-led services.
